What was in the demo
Here's what GPT-4 can do, based on what's been shown in the developer demo:
1. It can reason about complex subjects and solve difficult intellectual tasks. It now outperforms the average human in most exams that it's been tested on, including math, law, physics, and history. In the demo, it understood the US tax code and answered a cryptic tax question, including calculation.
2. It can accept more input — tens of thousands of words per message. This means it can solve more specific, context-dependent complex tasks. In the demo, GPT-4 was able to consume the entirety of Discord Python API documentation to figure out how to fix a bug in its code.
3. It can understand images. In the demo, GPT-4 was able to describe the content of a cartoon and correctly explain the humor behind it. It also apparently solves the Andrej Karpathy computer vision riddle.
4. It's really, really, really good at programming. In the demo, it managed to write a whole Discord bot based on a very short description.
5. It can turn wireframes into working code. In the demo, GPT-4 got a photo of a drawing of a website and then produced valid HTML code to implement that website.
How companies are using GPT-4
Things are progressing extremely fast. Even with the current capabilities, almost every major industry segment can be disrupted with a new AI-based product.
OpenAI partnered with other companies to show off the model's capabilities:
Duolingo and Khan Academy now use GPT-4 for mentoring students.
Morgan Stanley and Stripe have GPT-4 handling documentation search in the form of a chatbot.
Be My Eyes, a non-profit for visually impaired people, uses GPT-4 to automatically describe what the phone camera sees instead of a volunteer.
Note that Duolingo, Khan Academy, and Be My Eyes partnerships directly involve the substitution of humans for AI.
What people are doing with GPT-4 (and couldn't with GPT-3.5)
Build a Flappy Bird clone and train AI to play it
Write "one-click lawsuits" to sue robocallers
Write a recursive λ-Calculus parser
